The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced that westbound Interstate 80 in Bureau County will close overnight for repairs starting at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, weather permitting. The closure will stretch from the Illinois 40 interchange (exit 45) to the Illinois 78 interchange (exit 33), while eastbound I-80 will remain open.

A detour for westbound I-80 will guide drivers to use Illinois 40, U.S. 6, and Illinois 78. Westbound I-80 is set to reopen by 6 a.m. on Thursday, May 9.

The ongoing construction project on nearly 10 miles of I-80 in Bureau County, costing $36.8 million over two years, began in March. The construction aims to resurface I-80 from the Bureau-Henry County line to east of the Illinois 40 interchange.

Currently, traffic has been restricted to one lane in each direction, utilizing the westbound lanes as work commences to patch and resurface the eastbound lanes. The project involves fixing various bridges and culverts in the work zone until late fall 2024. By spring 2025, work will transition to the westbound lanes with traffic shifted to the eastbound lanes. The entire project is anticipated to conclude in late fall 2025.

Motorists should anticipate delays, allocate additional travel time through the area, and be ready for slow or stationary traffic. Whenever possible, consider using alternative routes to avoid the construction area. Drivers are reminded to adhere to changed conditions and signage in work zones, follow speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices, and stay vigilant for workers and equipment.
